As a former member of the Intelligence Corps, my area was Counter-Signals Intelligence. Our job was to penetrate or infiltrate communications networks using methods available to hostile intelligence forces and then develop countermeasures that an organization could use to protect itself from attack.
In English, I hacked phones, computer systems, radios, fax machines and cell phones to figure out how to make them more secure.
Keep this in mind when I say that the fact that the hacking was linked to the GRU is significant beyond belief. In my time, standing policy considered this an act of war.
Where do we go from here? I am concerned that, on the surface, we are trying to normalize relations with a country whose leadership is actively behaving this way.
I do have a political bias. I have always been and will always be on the side of the US citizenry. I pray that our leadership has the same loyalty to country and not to self and has the courage, candor and commitment to initiate and follow-through with policies to that end.
